Being Peranakan in Singapore. The subjective experience of an intercultural identity within an institutionalised multicultural context
This article aims to explore Peranakan identity in Singapore. The Peranakans are the descendants of traders from China and India who settled in Southeast Asia and married local Malay women. We will analyse how this ‘Creole’ identity is utilised at an institutional level within this institutionalised multicultural context.
We will present the results of a qualitative study that has analysed the identity characteristics of people who self-identify as Peranakan in Singapore, as well as the representations of this identity, both for those who identify with it and for the rest of Singapore’s citizens. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with seven participants (three women and four men) aged between 24 and 66, in which the following topics were addressed: origins and questions of provenance, representations of belonging, Singapore today, transmission and projections for the future. Despite having been rendered invisible following the establishment of ethnic categories, the Peranakan community now occupies a prominent place on a symbolic level. We propose the hypothesis that, in the long term, it could embody a new, intercultural Singaporean national identity, paving the way for a new dynamic of coexistence in the country.
