In 1998/99 I did a six months practical training in Dharamsala, India working in a psycho-social project that offers counselling for Tibetan torture survivors1 who have fled to India after the Chinese occupation of Tibet and the subsequent oppression that often results in long prison terms and torture. In the small exile community I interviewed a number of torture survivors to try to find out what possibilities Tibetans have to cope with trauma.
